The American Ultra J Bass V neck has a modern-D profile. It’s flatter than a standard-D, with a faster back and a little more “meat” on the shoulders. Fender created an all-new process to apply a thin coat of satin urethane, giving the neck a completely smooth, raw wood feel. Your hands won’t stick here. The maple fretboard has rolled Bound 10"-14" compound-radius fingerboard; 21 medium-jumbo frets. Two Noiseless Vintage Jazz Bass pickups. Redesigned active/passive preamp. Slim with wide shoulders, the “Modern D” neck profile works for any musical style and a silky, smooth Ultra satin finish makes the neck effortless to play. The standard has graphite rods in the neck, the special doesn't and has a narrower neck. The standard has CS 60 pickups, the special has Vintage Alnico. The tuning machines and bridges are also different. The Special absolutely DOES have graphite rods in the neck. LoveThatBass likes this.
Nor is it hefty. Though it has a full-sized Jazz Bass body, this one clocks in at a manageable 4.25kg/9.3lbs – we’ve heard some are lighter – and it actually feels a bit lighter than that, as it’s very nicely balanced. Vintage fans will approvingly note the neck’s slab rosewood fingerboard, the familiar 1.5-inch Jazz-width nut, the

The latest incarnation of the Fender American Standard Jazz Bass takes this classic instrument to new heights. In addition to its legendary offset-waist body and slender neck design, the Fender American Jazz Bass sports some incredible new features, including Custom Shop pickups and a new satin neck finish. That ’93 American Jazz Standard is still one of my main instruments, but I’ve added a number of other Jazz Basses alongside it, including a ’76 that is killer. Over the past three decades, I’ve played a host of Jazz Basses, from vintage ’60s models to the reissues and modern updates Fender has produced in that same time span. It was everything great about a Jazz bass, with a superb B-string, and on par with every high-end bass I've ever played in terms of feel, construction, response, etc. I also had a '97 American Standard V back in the day with custom-wound SD single-coils. That was another great bass, but the '08 was superb. Fender Jazz Bass vs. Precision Bass. A Jazz Bass typically has a thinner neck (17/16″ wide at the nut, compared to the Precision’s 13/4″), has two narrow, eight-polepiece pickups (instead of one on the Precision Bass) which deliver a more versatile tone (often described as richer in the midrange and treble). I got an american standard jazz 4 string somewhat recently and I liked the strings that came with it (fender 8250M). They were very sensitive to the volume knobs and I could get a nice sound I liked by rolling off the bridge pickup a bit. Then I put some d'addario chromes on it 50-105 and played that for about a month.
